Billy, it's the middle of the fairway
00:01
with a short iron, pin on the left, water on the left,
00:03
use that slope to slide it in close to that pin.
00:06
I'm going right at it.
00:07
Let's see it.
00:09
(swaggering rock guitar)
00:22
[Todd] Most amateurs would just fire right at it.
00:23
But you know the thing that amateurs struggle with
00:26
is when they watch golf on TV,
00:28
TV's showing the guys that are playing the best that week.
00:30
He's going to hit it maybe two feet from the hole.
00:32
When we realistically consider distance,
00:33
average on tour is probably 18 feet.
00:35
[Todd] So you have to evaluate
00:36
the pros and the cons of the shot.
00:38
Is it a good distance for you?
00:39
Is the pin accessible?
00:41
What's the risk if you go for the pin
00:43
and you don't pull it off?
00:44
Is the wind helping you get it to the flag?
00:46
And then the other thing, I think, that's really important,
00:47
is how confident are you in this shot?
00:48
Is it a club that you're confident with?
00:50
Do you feel well that day?
00:52
How are you playing that day?
00:53
I don't have to be as aggressive here.
00:55
Give me a chance to make a birdie,
00:56
if not I walk off with a par, which, for most amateurs,
00:59
that's a really good score.
01:02
My caddy, Josh, and I, we just talk
01:04
about how much risk do we want to take on.
01:06
Often we're going to pick a target
01:08
probably about 15 feet out of the hole,
01:10
where if I hit it straight I've got 15 feet putt for birdie.
01:13
If I pull it a little bit, if it turns over,
01:15
it should be really good,
01:16
and if I push a little right,
01:17
I'm still 25 feet right of the hole,
01:20
so we want to take enough of a risk
01:22
that we're getting rewarded with hitting a good shot
01:24
and having a chance for a birdie,
01:25
but not too much where we don't pull off the shot,
01:27
we're in trouble by going in the water.
01:29
So I feel confident enough
01:31
that I can put it in between the water and the flag,
01:34
and give myself that nice uphill five foot birdie putt,
01:36
that would make it a lot easier.
01:37
I'd like to see that.
01:39
(swaggering rock guitar)
01:51
(needle slides, splash)
01:52
A watery grave.
01:54
(eagle cries)
01:57
Go ahead and give a shot,
01:58
let's see what you can do with this one.
02:00
Sure.
02:01
(swaggering rock guitar)
02:04
[Todd] Very nice.
02:05
So hopefully that's some help for players out there,
02:07
check out the risk reward and make the right decision
02:09
so they can shoot lower scores.
02:11
Keep your ego in check too.
02:12
That's right.
02:14
(laughs)
02:14
You can't hit it in the water if you tried!
02:15
