The Super Bowl’s Super Villains
Alex Myers discusses what makes the Patriots’ latest title run extra tough to watch for non-New Englanders.
Released on 1/22/2019
So the New England Patriots are back in the Super Bowl,
It's enough to make you sick isn't it?
Seriously, if there's anything more tiresome
than seeing the same team win year after year,
it's having that team claim underdog status.
Yes, New England was a three point underdog
at Kansas City in the AFC Championship game.
I know because I bet against the Pats like an idiot.
But that was the first time in 68 games
that Brady and Belichick's bunch weren't favored.
And they're the favorite to win the Super Bowl
at the start of literally every season.
So enough with the, no one believed in us act.
To be clear I believe the Patriots are a great team,
obviously, they've just been involved in some, let's say,
shenanigans through the years.
And they've benefited from more good breaks
than Keanu Reeves' acting career.
There's gonna be a third John Wick, really?
Okay, so my Giants got just a tad lucky
with the David Tyree helmet catch in Super Bowl 42,
but the Pats have had the tuck rule,
the offsides at Kansas City that had no effect on the play,
always winning the coin toss in overtime.
You can go on and on.
And as great as the Pats are,
they could easily be on a five game Super Bowl losing streak
if Atlanta hadn't blown a 25 point lead,
and if Seattle had just given the ball to Marshawn Lynch
on the one yard line!
Thanks a lot, Pete Carroll.
There'd be a lot less genius and GOAT talk
going around these days.
I shouldn't care this much about rooting against a team,
but I do,
and it's torture,
and it doesn't help that the guy filming this right now,
Michael Steeden, is a Pats fan.
And my other Grind collaborator, Mason Leverington,
is a Cowboys fan, which might be even worse.
Talk about hostile work conditions.
Anyway, maybe a combo of a young coach
and QB with model girlfriends can beat
an old coach and a QB with the supermodel girlfriend.
Maybe CBS is hiring John Malkovich
to make another hype video to fire up the underdog.
Maybe the Pats will get a bad whistle.
Good one, right?
No, no, I've learned my lesson too many times.
My money will be on those plucky Patriots
winning Super Bowl number six.
That is, if I can stomach watching.
