00:00
So I've got some good news for Phil Mickelson.
00:02
You know how he's always been
00:03
a bit overshadowed by Tiger Woods?
00:05
Well, there's finally a title
00:06
he can claim over his long-time rival.
00:09
That's because Phil has been named, drum roll, please,
00:12
[drum roll]
00:13
Golf Digest Content King of the PGA Tour!
00:15
Hip-hip, hooray!
00:17
Okay, so I decided on this award alone,
00:20
and it's really not an award,
00:21
so much as a very, very unofficial title,
00:24
but it's something he can hang his visor on.
00:26
So what was the criteria in creating this list?
00:29
Basically, I went by which players do the most
00:31
to help us create content on our website.
00:34
These guys are especially vital
00:35
during the slow times of the year
00:37
when web traffic slower than JB Holmes hitting a golf shot.
00:40
And while star power certainly counts,
00:43
I also looked to highlight players
00:44
with entertaining social media accounts
00:46
like Max Homa and rabblerousers like Patrick Reed.
00:50
Some tour pros like Joel Dahmen
00:51
got bonus points for having funny caddies.
00:53
Others like Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka
00:55
got extra credit for their famous WAGs.
00:58
As you might imagine, WAG-related posts are pretty popular,
01:02
and, well, those were pretty much all the rules.
01:05
With all due respect to Bryson Dechambeau,
01:07
the process wasn't very scientific.
01:10
Anyway, you can see the full list on golfdigest.com,
01:13
but I'm going to count down the top five here.
01:15
Number five, Rory McIlroy.
01:17
Simply put, no one provides more highlights
01:20
and sound bites than this guy.
01:22
Well, other than Phil.
01:24
Number four, Eddie Pepperell.
01:26
This Brit is the only golfer
01:28
who can challenge Max Homa on Twitter.
01:30
He keeps an entertaining and thoughtful blog,
01:32
and he recently punked fellow Englishman Matt Wallace
01:35
so badly that Ashton Kutcher would've been proud.
01:38
Number three, Bryson Dechambeau,
01:41
another golfer whose pressers have become must-watch TV,
01:44
if only to hear his explanations for some of the things
01:47
this former physics major does,
01:49
like spraying golf balls with water on the range
01:52
to test the effects of dew.
01:55
He really does this, among other things.
01:58
Many, many other things.
02:01
God bless you, Bryson.
02:02
Number two, Tiger Woods.
02:04
To be clear, we write more about Woods
02:06
than any other golfer, by far.
02:09
It's been said often that Tiger is the Neo,
02:12
but he's also the spike when it comes to web traffic.
02:15
People will click on any story involving Tiger,
02:18
and I mean anything.
02:19
For instance, he changed the felt on his pool table
02:22
during the 2017 British Open
02:24
while he was still recovering from back surgery,
02:26
and that wound up being our most-viewed post for the week.
02:29
Again, that was during a major championship
02:32
in a week he wasn't even playing,
02:34
so you better believe we are milking this GOAT
02:37
now that he's back.
02:39
See what I did there?
02:40
And number one, Phil Mickelson,
02:42
a man who checks all the crucial content boxes.
02:45
Popular, check.
02:46
Newsworthy, check.
02:47
Interesting, exciting, controversial?
02:49
Check, check, check.
02:51
And finally, social media-savvy, check.
02:54
This last aspect only came about at the end of 2018,
02:57
but man, has Mickelson been great,
03:00
offering fantastic takes and daggers
03:02
while driving to the course,
03:03
instructional videos in flip-flops,
03:05
funny fitness tips for your calves,
03:07
and now a Fireside with Phil series.
03:10
Genius.
03:11
Seriously, writing Phil being Phil
03:14
and What will Phil do next posts
03:16
is practically a full-time job in itself,
03:18
so congrats to Phil on being
03:20
the Content King of the PGA Tour.
03:22
At least being named our Content King.
03:25
And thanks to Phil as well.
03:27
Long may his reign last.
03:29
