this Coastal Links, which opened in 2010,

00:31
On the Par four third,
00:33
you have to hit your tee shot over a tall sand ridge,
00:35
then walk up to it to reach the fairway.
00:38
When you get to the top,
00:39
the view is guaranteed to take your breath away.
00:42
Below lies a valley on the rim of the Pacific
00:44
with a thousand sand dunes, tall and short,
00:47
a green carpet of humps and bumps accented
00:49
by hillsides of blazing gorse bushes.
00:52
Doak and Urbina routed 14 of the 18 holes
00:55
within this valley,
00:56
creating fairways of such vast proportions
00:59
that there are a dozen ways to play each one,
01:01
challenging players' imaginations and performance.
01:04
The greens are also enormous, slanted and canted,
01:08
embracing mounds and hollows.
01:09
Some bunkers are huge, too.
01:11
Especially Hell Bunker on a Par five sixth,
01:14
with its meandering front face of vertical railroad ties.
01:17
This is mostly a self-contained valley of delights.
01:20
Although the hilltop's seventh green
01:22
provides an awesome window to the ocean,
01:24
and there's another great panorama behind the 15th green.
01:27
You recross the sand ridge on 16
01:30
and finish in a softer, quieter landscape,
01:32
with a few final dunes hiding much
01:33
of the punchbowl green at 18.
01:36
Old MacDonald is classic link-style golf
01:39
with a decidedly innovative twist.
