Friar's Head

Among today's golf architects, nobody does modern classics better than the team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, so it's not surprising that their unique take on a traditional design at Friar's Head, which sits among the sand dunes along the north shore of Long Island, has steadily climbed Golf Digest's list of America's 100 Greatest, from No. 34 in 2011 to No. 19 in 2017. [Narrator] Among today's golf architects,
00:01
nobody does modern classics better than
00:04
the team of Bill Corre and Ben Crenshaw.
00:06
So, it's not surprising that their unique take
00:08
on a traditional design at Friar's Head,
00:10
which sits among the sand dunes along
00:11
the north shore of Long Island,
00:13
has steadily climbed Golf Digest's
00:15
list of America's 100 greatest,
00:17
from number 34 in 2011 to number 19 in 2017.
00:22
What's surprising is that Coore and Crenshaw,
00:24
known for their minimalist style that moves little earth
00:27
had the disruptive vision here to reshape
00:29
nearly half the golf course from flat potato fields.
00:33
The transitions back and forth are seamless,
00:35
from wooded holes and natural sand dunes
00:37
to open holes on what is now a gently rolling meadowland.
00:40
Friar's Head favors the ground game,
00:42
perhaps more than aerial one, calling on players
00:45
to get creative with their shot selections.
00:47
Yes, there are strategically placed bunkers
00:49
that can be carried for optimum angles into the greens,
00:52
but most approach shots are best fed off
00:54
slopes and mounds to get close to pins,
00:56
and variety in the size of targets
00:58
adds to the performance test.
01:00
The green on the par three 10th,
01:02
half-hidden in native dunes, is enormous,
01:04
the size of a parking lot, while the 16th and 17th greens
01:07
are tiny, each as small as a one-car garage.
01:11
Some of our panelists call Friar's Head
01:13
the best work by Coore and Crenshaw
01:14
since Sand Hills Golf Club in Nebraska,
01:17
now ranked number nine on the 100 greatest,
01:19
which means this pioneering take on a traditional design
01:22
could very well read the top 10 in years to come.
