The first thought of retirement
00:22
certainly came to me when I was driving back
00:24
from the Masters in 2013, when I was driving back
00:27
to my rental home in the car by myself.
00:30
It was raining, and I just remember thinking you know,
00:33
that this is my time to retire.
00:36
Something came into my head, I had that thought
00:38
that I wanted to retire, and I subsequently came home
00:42
to New Zealand following that thought,
00:44
and talked to a few of my friends.
00:45
And then they said, well you can't really retire right now,
00:48
you're still working with Adam.
00:49
You can't just quit in the middle of the year, and so forth,
00:52
but that's when retirement sort of entered my head.
00:55
Like I said, driving home from the 2013 masters.
00:59
I don't miss caddying one bit, to be honest.
01:03
You know I've been out in the tour for 36 years,
01:05
and it's a lot of travel.
01:07
It's a lot of time away from home,
01:08
and a lot of time spent in hotels flying around,
01:10
and not leading a normal life, as such.
01:14
So retirement is great,
01:17
and I haven't missed the tour one bit.
01:20
Certainly enjoying being away from it.
01:22

01:29
When you're faced with retirement
01:30
and you decide to retire, one of the things that's great
01:33
about it is that having spent so many years
01:36
traveling to and from home,
01:37
you never actually get a lot of things done.
01:39
You sort of just keep maintaining things.
01:42
When you live on sort of a big property like we do,
01:45
there's always lots of things that need to be done,
01:47
but you sort of only get to maintain,
01:49
and you don't get a lot of projects done.
01:51
For me, having had the opportunity to retire,
01:54
I'm getting a lot of those things done.
01:55
A lot of those projects have started,
01:57
a lot of them are finished, and some of them
01:58
haven't been started, but it's been great.
02:00
There hasn't been any downtime, if you like,
02:02
and it's given me a bit more of a chance
02:04
to spend time with my family,
02:06
do a bit more racing than I normally do,
02:07
and then spend some time raising money for my foundation.
02:10
So, so far it's been all positive.
02:12

02:19
I like property maintenance.
02:20
I like cutting trees, trimming trees,
02:23
trimming hedges, mowing lawns,
02:25
cutting up firewood, all that sort of things.
02:27
I love outdoor work.
02:28
I love property maintenance.
02:30
It's something that I've always liked.
02:33
I like at the end of the day
02:34
when you go around mowing the lawns and everything,
02:35
and everything looks great.
02:38
I like tinkering with my race cars.
02:39
That's something I like to do.
02:43
You know, I like a bit of fitness sort of stuff.
02:44
I like swimming and I like biking.
02:46
There's lots to do around here where we live.
02:53
Yeah, retirement is fun, but I guess one of the things
02:57
with retirement is that some people say
03:00
you can't retire forever.
03:02
You know maybe, yeah maybe there might be a special
03:05
young player that you think you could help
03:10
win a major championship.
03:12
At the end of the day, whether you're a player
03:14
or whether you're a caddie,
03:15
we all dream about winning major championships.
03:17
That's what it all boils down to.
03:19
(laughs)
03:22
If there was a young guy that really sparked my interest,
03:26
and perhaps that might be something
03:28
that would drag me out of retirement.
