If you're a golfer, you're probably pretty familiar
00:11
with the various rules and etiquette codes
00:13
that come with the game.
00:15
But, if you're a man, there are a few things
00:17
that you may actually not be aware of.
00:19
In fact, when it comes to one particular area,
00:22
odds are you're completely clueless.
00:24
As a guy, there's actually a laundry list of things
00:27
that you should pay more attention to
00:28
when you're playing with a member of the opposite sex,
00:31
whether you know her well or not.
00:33
But here are the five things you absolutely shouldn't do.
00:39
First, let's talk about sharing a cart with a woman golfer.
00:42
One of the biggest sins you can commit
00:44
is to forget that she's playing
00:45
from a different set of tees.
00:48
This happens all the time.
00:49
A guy will tee off from the back tees
00:51
and get so wrapped up in his own shot
00:53
he completely neglects to think of his playing partner
00:55
and just blows past the forward tees
00:57
without stopping to let her off.
00:59
This, gentlemen, does not go over well.
01:02
You may get away with it once or twice,
01:03
but that's usually the limit for most women.
01:07
The next unwritten rule is one
01:08
you've all been guilty of breaking at one point or another,
01:11
whether you know it or not.
01:12
I'm talking about giving unsolicited
01:14
on course swing advice to a female playing partner.
01:18
There's nothing more frustrating than
01:20
hitting a bad golf shot and then
01:21
having someone giving you their armchair analysis.
01:24
Trust me on this.
01:25
Don't tell her what club to hit.
01:27
Don't tell her to slow down or speed up.
01:29
And, most important of all,
01:31
don't ever tell her to keep her head down
01:33
and her left arm straight.
01:35
That's as cliche as it gets
01:37
and she'll be likely to walk off the course.
01:40
The truth is you're probably not qualified
01:42
to give swing advice to anybody.
01:44
And she's not asking for any.
01:46
Even if she was, the course is not the place to do it.
01:50
Here comes probably the most important
01:52
unwritten rule of all.
01:53
Don't do anything that your female playing partner
01:56
can interpret to mean that you think
01:58
her score doesn't matter.
02:00
Maybe her ball is plugged in a greenside bunker
02:03
and she needs three swings to get it out.
02:05
Once she finally makes contact,
02:07
she skulls her shot and you try to be helpful
02:09
by sticking out your foot to stop
02:10
the ball from careening over the green into another bunker.
02:13
The same thing goes for giving her putts
02:15
that shouldn't be gimmes, like anything over three feet.
02:18
In what universe would you ever do that with another man?
02:22
Once again, you may think you're being nice,
02:24
but you're really just being condescending.
02:27
Our fourth unwritten rule has to do with your game.
02:30
Ask any woman golfer what she dislikes the most
02:33
about playing with men and she's likely to answer
02:35
that they sometimes get so angry after hitting a bad shot.
02:39
Everyone knows that golf is frustrating.
02:42
But taking it out on the grass or the cart
02:44
or, heaven forbid, your club is a very
02:47
unattractive display of juvenile temper.
02:50
No woman is gonna expect you not to be disappointed,
02:52
but if you start cursing, pouting, and hurling clubs,
02:56
you'll embarrass her.
02:58
Remember, just because your round has been
03:00
soured by a few bad shots doesn't mean
03:02
you should ruin it for everybody else.
03:05
Last, but not least, we come to one of my own
03:07
biggest pet peeves and it has to do with gambling.
03:11
Men and women all like to involve
03:12
friendly matches in their golf outings.
03:14
And there's usually a little something on the line.
03:17
Chivalry might convince you to refuse
03:19
to take your playing partner's money,
03:21
but, when that moment arrives
03:22
when she's fishing out her wallet,
03:23
you have to resist the urge to
03:25
tell her to put it away.
03:27
If she lost the bet, you have to take her money.
03:30
So, unless you can be man enough
03:32
to actually collect on your bet,
03:33
just make it a rule to never gamble with women.
03:37
All these unwritten rules may seem complicated,
03:39
but they're really not.
03:40
The bottom line is that you should treat
03:42
a female playing partner exactly
03:44
the same way you treat a man.
03:46
Save, perhaps, for some of the locker room lingo.
03:48
Just show her respect and let her play her own game
03:51
and you'll be fine.
03:53
And, if all else fails,
03:55
just tell her that you're concerned about goofing up
03:57
and ask her how you can make her playing experience better.
04:00
A little honesty goes a long way.
