00:03
Harry, what are you doing?
00:05
Huge show tonight, Amanda.
00:07
We have Aaron Wise is on the show.
00:08
He won the NCAA Individual Title,
00:11
of course the Team Title.
00:12
He was the medalist at Canadian Tour School,
00:15
he just won his sectional,
00:17
so tonight it's all about winners
00:19
and I thought, I'm gonna bring some of my own trophies in,
00:21
you know, to celebrate champions tonight on Callaway Live.
00:25
I've got my King Trophy here,
00:28
that was a big one, that's real plastic.
00:30
And oh, of course, my Emmy.
00:32
Wait wait wait, but that's not yours.
00:35
Well, we're one team here, so Newbarth didn't mind.
00:38
And then, this one's a big one.
00:40
Third place Egg Toss,
00:42
eighth grade field day.
00:45
Funny story about this one.
00:46
It was a rainy day that day
00:48
and you know, there's nothing worse than rain
00:50
on an egg toss, but my Mom said to me,
00:53
focus, be patient and you will find your way
00:57
to the podium, and so I grabbed the egg,
00:58
I put it on the--
00:59
Okay, I get it, you're really proud of this
01:01
trophy, but, don't you have a show to go do?
01:02
Oh, live show, no script?
01:05
Show of champions?
01:06
What could possibly go wrong?
01:11
(upbeat electronic music)
01:26
(audience cheering)
01:30
Show of champions.
01:31
Show of champions.
01:33
Show of champions.
01:36
Thank you very much, thank you very much.
01:38
Thank you.
01:40
You're too kind.
01:41
You are too kind.
01:42
Thank you, this is Callaway Live,
01:43
I'm Harry Arnett.
01:44
Tonight is a night of champions.
01:48
Do you guys like that?
01:49
[Audience Member] Yes.
01:50
We'll go with that, we're gonna get that legally approved
01:52
or rejected like most things do around our office.
01:55
How's everybody doing, look at this crowd.
01:56
This is a crazy crowd.
01:57
This is an Aaron Wise crowd, isn't it?
01:59
[Audience Member] Oh yeah.
02:00
Yeah?
02:01
(audience cheering)
02:03
Yeah.
02:04
Yes.
02:06
It's gonna be a great night tonight.
02:07
It's US Open Week, and you guys remember,
02:10
I think the biggest thing we did
02:11
on the show last year, if you guys remember this,
02:14
we were the first show of any type.
02:17
Any show can get champions or
02:20
US Open people, or whatever.
02:22
We're the only show that actually had
02:24
the US Open venue on the show.
02:26
Do you remember that, when we talked to Chambers Bay
02:27
last year?
02:28
Little controversial.
02:29
Tonight, we thought, who better
02:31
to talk about the event this week at Oakmont,
02:36
but Oakmont itself.
02:38
We have Oakmont on the telephone, Oakmont!
02:40
How are you, sir?
02:41
Hold on I'm gonna pull out my clearly
02:43
not prepared in advanced questions for you.
02:46
Oakmont,
02:47
what have you got in store this week
02:49
for the US Open contestants, my friend?
02:52
[Oakmont Voiceover] Let me see,
02:54
my greens are firmer than a 10 dollar mattress.
02:57
They're harder to read than Moby Dick.
03:00
And faster than a box of donuts goes at fat camp.
03:03
(audience laughing)
03:05
I've got rough that puts you on the bullet train
03:07
to double bogey land or worse,
03:10
and my fairways have more slopes than
03:12
an Austrian ski resort.
03:13
And from tee to green
03:15
I'm longer than a bad opera.
03:17
(laughing)
03:19
Wow, that's a lot to pack in on a US Open Week.
03:22
[Oakmont Voiceover] US Open Week?
03:25
That's every week, son.
03:27
(laughing)
03:28
I guess we're in for a memorable tournament.
03:30
Thanks, Oakmont.
03:31
[Oakmont Voiceover] Hey, any time Harry.
03:33
And hey, sorry about that 98 I laid on you
03:35
the last time you were out here.
03:37
Hey. (crowd laughing)
03:39
Not cool.
03:41
Thanks for bringing that up, I really appreciate it.
03:43
Hey, really quick, before we let you go.
03:45
You have more insight than anyone.
03:46
Who do you think's gonna win this week?
03:48
[Oakmont Voiceover] That's easy.
03:49
The guy who drives it best,
03:51
hits his irons best,
03:53
putts the best, and gets up and down from everywhere.
03:58
Oh, that's it?
03:59
Nobody can do that.
04:00
[Oakmont Voiceover] Exactly!
04:01
Which means nobody wins except me.
04:04
I'm winning this week!
04:06
(laughing maniacally)
04:09
(crowd cheering)
04:11
Thank you, yeah.
04:13
Throw that away.
04:16
That was the,
04:18
totally unprepared.
04:20
Totally impromptu questions for Oakmont
04:22
and world's worst scary laugh,
04:24
if I do say so myself.
04:25
(crowd laughing)
04:26
Don't go anywhere, we're gonna be right back.
04:27
Aaron Wise is gonna be right here.
04:29
Don't go anywhere, thank you.
04:30
(audience cheering)
04:33
(upbeat electronic music)
04:43
Virgil Herring here, with another Callaway
04:44
30 Seconds To Better.
04:46
One of the most important things
04:47
in understanding the wedge play is that
04:49
your club face is a paint brush.
04:51
If we want to hit a low shot,
04:52
we're going to choose to cock the golf club
04:54
and de-loft it, and we come through,
04:55
we're gonna turn the face down
04:57
to add a little bit of draw spin on it
04:59
so it hits and takes off.
05:00
So here we go.
05:02
We get set up,
05:02
put the face back,
05:05
rotate it through on the way through.
05:07
Excellent.
05:12
Alright, that was an abrupt finish.
05:15
Abrupt stop, alright.
05:19
Welcome back to Callaway Live.
05:21
This is a Champion's Week, on US Open Week,
05:24
can we call it that?
05:25
Our guest tonight electrified,
05:27
yes I said electrified.
05:30
Electrified the home crowd at Eugene Country Club.
05:33
Not only did he win the Individual NCAA Title,
05:36
but then he led his team to the Team Title,
05:39
and I believe that's the first time that
05:41
that's ever happened, where the individual
05:42
led the team, and if it's not, don't double check that,
05:44
'cause I'm going with it.
05:45
Please welcome to our show tonight,
05:47
Aaron Wise.
05:48
(audience cheering)
05:54
How are ya?
05:55
Good, how are you?
05:56
Good to see you, rockin' out.
05:57
Good to see you, that was a nice firm one,
05:58
have a seat.
05:59
Thank you.
06:01
(audience cheering)
06:05
When will you stop smiling when you hear people
06:07
introduce you as the NCAA Champion?
06:10
I don't think that'll ever get old.
06:12
Ever?
06:12
Ever.
06:13
Let's try it again.
06:14
NCAA Champion, Aaron Wise.
06:15
(audience cheering)
06:16
There we go!
06:20
What was that like?
06:21
I can't remember watching a college event so intently
06:24
with not just the Individual Title,
06:26
but obviously the Team Title as well.
06:30
You just looked like unflappable.
06:32
Even when you kind of got yourself in a little
06:34
trouble on 18 on the last hole,
06:35
and the announcers were saying, of course you
06:38
weren't watching any of this.
06:39
Maybe you were.
06:40
I haven't watched it, either.
06:41
Could have been.
06:42
The announcer's like, this guy, he's really got to shot here
06:43
and you just took, I think it was a wedge or something
06:45
right over a tree and hit it to like 20 feet.
06:47
Unflappable, but you had to be nervous.
06:49
I was a little nervous, obviously, having the home crowd
06:51
out there, but all week long
06:53
kind of felt like a Ryder Cup,
06:54
what you imagine, just having all those people
06:56
out there rooting for the Ducks and only the Ducks, so
06:59
it was awesome and what an experience.
07:01
[Harry] And how was it with the teammates.
07:03
What was it like an night as you guys
07:06
ascended up the normal leaderboard.
07:09
No, they were keeping it all nice,
07:11
there was no nothing, everything was fine, okay.
07:13
(crowd laughing)
07:14
This crowd lets their minds wander.
07:16
Dirty minds, dirty minds.
07:18
Yeah, but what was it like an night
07:19
when you guys were hanging out after
07:21
night after night after night
07:23
and keep advancing, 'cause you guys were
07:24
kind of underdogs.
07:25
Yeah, the first day we didn't play very well and
07:27
everyone was kind of down in the dumps and then
07:29
the second round we came out and played well and
07:31
every day thereafter it was just like wow,
07:34
this can kind of happen and every day we just kept
07:36
gaining more and more belief in ourselves and
07:38
realizing that stuff like this can actually happen,
07:42
the Oregon Ducks can actually win a Championship and
07:44
to go on and do what we did as a team
07:46
and for Solmon to make those puts he did and
07:48
the second to last and the last match is just
07:51
absolutely incredible.
07:52
And are you a vocal guy with the team,
07:54
like firing guys up.
07:55
'Cause I even saw after your match,
07:56
you were walking around, obviously as the
07:58
last matches in the championship came down to the wire,
08:01
you a guy that kind of works with the team?
08:03
Yeah, I'm pretty shy normally but
08:05
once I get to know people and obviously
08:07
once I get into competition, I become a pretty loud guy
08:09
and I have a lot of energy out there and
08:11
if I can pump up the guys, I'm gonna do it.
08:13
I said before the show, right before I came out
08:16
I was like, hey do you just want to poke your head out
08:18
and see the crowd just so you're not
08:19
worried about how big the crowd is, he's like, no,
08:21
I'll be alright.
08:22
(crowd laughing)
08:23
Little easier than making a putt that matters
08:26
for a National Title, or a Team Title, huh?
08:28
A little bit.
08:29
And then you rolled right through that momentum
08:32
after that to go to your sectional qualifier
08:35
and you won that thing.
08:36
Yeah.
08:37
(laughing)
08:40
I did.
08:40
You were there, right?
08:41
Lot of fun, I was there.
08:43
Were you actually relaxed during that,
08:44
were you sort of freewheeling, let's see what happens, or
08:46
did you get nervous as you went into that 36 hole day two?
08:50
Yeah, obviously that's a big day
08:52
qualifying for the Open and it's the longest day in golf
08:54
and it really is, it's a grind and
08:56
I didn't get off to a great start and
08:58
obviously it was a little different
09:00
coming from the energy and excitement of
09:01
winning a National Championship to
09:03
no one's out there and you're out there on your own
09:06
with your caddy trying to play golf, but
09:07
got things going in the back part of that second nine
09:10
and made seven birdies on that second nine
09:12
which is awesome, really got me going and
09:14
finished it off in style and at the end
09:16
I had a little crowd going, so I got a little
09:18
energy in there and
09:19
it was a lot of fun.
09:20
Seven out of nine holes you birdied.
09:22
What happened on the other two, dude?
09:23
(crowd laughing)
09:25
Come on.
09:26
Can't be perfect, man.
09:27
You got to bring it
09:28
to the house, my friend. Can't be perfect.
09:28
Did you draw on the experience from the NCAA
09:32
or your college as you were going through that day
09:35
to sort of stay patient in the round?
09:37
Yeah, it's just got a lot of confidence from everything.
09:39
I played in the US Open qualifier two years ago
09:42
as a 17 year old and I remember just thinking to myself,
09:45
how am I ever going to compete with these guys?
09:47
They're so much bigger, so much better and then
09:50
two years later and I'm out there thinking
09:51
I'm kind of the guy everyone's chasing, so
09:53
it's pretty cool, but
09:54
it's amazing how that transition happens so quickly
09:57
in only two years.
09:58
Yeah, are you nervous for this week
10:00
at the US Open at all, I know the golf course
10:02
is probably unlike anything you've ever seen.
10:04
Yeah, it's gonna be an event unlike
10:06
anything I've ever seen, so,
10:08
I wouldn't say I'm nervous right now,
10:10
I'm more excited just to get out there
10:11
and see what it has to offer.
10:13
I think if you can win a national title
10:14
wearing a shirt that had a bunch of trees on it,
10:17
I don't see how you can't compete
10:19
this week at the US Open.
10:21
We rocked the tree shirt.
10:22
(laughing)
10:23
You can't deny that.
10:24
Alright, well I know that Amanda got to spend
10:26
a little time with you today on a new segment
10:28
we like to call, Shots Fired.
10:30
And I think this is our debut, is it not?
10:32
This is the premier of Shots Fired,
10:34
so we figured what better guy to make really really
10:36
uncomfortable, than the newest member of Team Callaway
10:38
who's naturally very shy, right, that's perfect.
10:41
What we did is we went to the people closest
10:43
to you and we asked what are the most embarrassing stories
10:47
you can give us about Aaron, and I got to say
10:50
they were really quick to give it up, like,
10:52
we did not have to ask them very many times,
10:54
so check out Shots Fired.
10:57
Here's how it works, we're gonna ask you
10:59
four questions, but he has a chance to get out of it
11:01
if he hits his target, check it out.
11:04
(country instrumental music)
11:10
(glass shattering)
11:12
Welcome to Shots Fired, our latest victim,
11:14
Aaron Wise, the newest member of Team Callaway, welcome.
11:17
Thank you very much.
11:18
Also an NCAA Champion, a lot of great things
11:20
happening for you lately.
11:21
We're so happy for you to be here.
11:23
I don't know how happy you're gonna be,
11:24
'cause we have four very uncomfortable questions for you.
11:27
We dug deep, people close to you in your life
11:29
gave us embarrassing stories,
11:30
so we're gonna take you into an Oakmont type scenario,
11:33
give you 100 foot putt.
11:34
If you knock it into the target,
11:35
you get to throw out two questions.
11:37
You do it again, you throw out all four,
11:39
you ready to go?
11:40
[Aaron] I am.
11:40
[Amanda] Alright.
11:41
We gave you no warm ups, by the way.
11:43
[Aaron] None.
11:43
I don't need any, we're good.
11:48
Not Oakmont speed.
11:50
Alright, we left it very short,
11:51
which makes me very happy, 'cause that means
11:53
we get to ask some questions, so come back in here.
11:55
I'll let you pick, so here are your topics.
11:57
Culture, Go Low,
11:59
Pac-12, or Say What?
12:02
What two would you like to answer?
12:03
I'll go with Go Low and Pac-12.
12:05
Alright, Go Low, here you go.
12:07
Tell us about your most disappointing 66
12:10
in your college career.
12:12
This is from coach Casey Martin,
12:13
he said we gotta ask you about it.
12:15
Yeah, it was Hawaii, my first freshman year,
12:18
I had a 66 and I got dropped, and
12:20
at that time I had a huge rivalry with our
12:23
other freshman, Hurley,
12:24
and I eagled my last hole to shoot 66
12:26
and he ended up finishing birdie birdie
12:28
to beat me by one, so,
12:29
that was obviously all fun and games, but
12:32
I actually ended up winning the tournament,
12:33
which was awesome and to hold an NCAA record
12:35
with the team's pretty cool.
12:36
Alright, Pac-12.
12:37
When you returned from Pac-12's last year,
12:40
what did you do with your second place trophy?
12:41
This is from roommate, Hurley Long.
12:43
Let's just say it's not around anymore.
12:46
It's off the street in Eugene somewhere.
12:50
(laughing)
12:50
I was driving home and, Mav just railed me at Pac-12,
12:53
so I kind of tossed it out the window
12:55
a little aggressively, and it went flying
12:57
and shattered into pieces.
12:59
You don't like to lose, do you?
13:00
Alright, two more questions remain
13:02
if you don't hit your target.
13:05
[Aaron] We'll hit this one a little harder.
13:12
[Amanda] Oh no. (chuckling)
13:14
Well.
13:15
[Amanda] Well it was better.
13:16
We'll go with the last two questions.
13:17
Alright, so here we go.
13:19
This is my favorite question we have.
13:21
What happened in High School that
13:22
turned you off from German exchange students forever?
13:25
Wow.
13:26
(laughing)
13:28
You're really bringing 'em all out, huh?
13:30
There was this girl, Melissa, who
13:33
I really liked and she
13:35
decided to leave me for a German guy.
13:38
Oh, Melissa, no.
13:39
It was hilarious because apparently
13:42
Hurley knew him pretty well,
13:43
'cause they were from 20 minutes from each other,
13:45
so I was all upset and ranting to him one night
13:47
and he was like, hey, I know that kid,
13:49
and it was just, he'll never let that one go,
13:51
that's for sure.
13:52
Alright, last question, Say What.
13:55
You've been known to say some pretty confident things
13:56
about being on the PGA Tour.
13:59
What did you tell your swing coach?
14:01
Why is college so much tougher than
14:03
playing on the PGA Tour?
14:05
I don't remember, I don't know this one at all.
14:06
You don't know this one?
14:07
He said you could not wait,
14:09
well for a couple of reasons,
14:10
first of all, you couldn't wait to get to
14:11
the PGA Tour, because when you hit it
14:13
into the junk, you have a million people there
14:15
to help you find your ball.
14:16
[Aaron] Oh yeah, mhm.
14:16
Right, and you also can't wait
14:18
to hit it in the bleachers.
14:19
And be able to drop right by the green.
14:20
Alright, well you kind of did survive.
14:23
I did.
14:24
Shots Fired, was it as bad as you thought
14:26
it was gonna be?
14:27
No.
14:28
Melissa, I think you made a huge mistake,
14:28
that's all I'm saying, thank you so much for joining us,
14:31
we are so happy that you're a part of Team Callaway.
14:34
(glass shattering)
14:36
Alright, Shots Fired!
14:38
(crowd cheering)
14:39
Alright, so.
14:40
Shots Fired.
14:41
I hope you guys liked it, so this segment
14:43
is something that we're gonna be doing a lot of.
14:45
We had a lot of them with Henrik Stenson, Marc Leishman,
14:49
Danny Willett, so a lot of those
14:52
coming up soon, exclusively on our Apple TV,
14:54
but Aaron I have to ask you
14:56
how soon after that segment ended
14:58
did you text your old college roommate
15:00
and say, dude, come on.
15:01
I haven't texted him yet, but I will.
15:03
You haven't, oh, God, I'm glad I didn't bet on that.
15:05
He was giving up a lot of information, though.
15:06
(crowd laughing)
15:07
He actually gave us like six more stories.
15:10
We had to limit it, 'cause it was only four questions,
15:12
so we had to get a lot of people in, but.
15:13
I told you there was a rivalry.
15:15
(laughing)
15:16
Yeah, so Harry, what did you think of this segment?
15:19
Do you think this is good, or you think
15:20
we're gonna scare all of our players away?
15:21
I love it and
15:22
Aaron, we're a company full of surprises.
15:24
Joining us now on the phone, Melissa.
15:26
Melissa!
15:27
(laughing)
15:31
I'm just kidding, I bet you she'd like that one back, huh?
15:33
Huh, Amanda?
15:34
(laughing)
15:36
But, and you're gonna have more chances
15:37
to talk about your roommate, I'm guessing
15:39
than he does over the next 24 months, so
15:41
revenge is a dish best served cold.
15:43
Exactly.
15:44
Yeah.
15:45
When did you decide
15:48
or know that this is what you wanted to do for a living?
15:52
It's kind of been always something I've worked towards
15:54
and obviously going through school and stuff,
15:57
school got really really hard,
15:59
and I wanted to go into a Law degree and
16:00
the time constraints for doing both school and golf
16:03
just came way too much, so
16:05
I talked to my family and a bunch of
16:07
people close to me and over Winter break
16:10
we decided, once Summer comes,
16:13
we'll finish out this term, 'cause obviously
16:15
the opportunity to play a National Championship
16:16
on your home course is something you're
16:17
never going to give up, but
16:19
once that was over it kind of made sense
16:21
for me to move on and I can always go
16:23
back to school if I need to and
16:24
even if I keep playing great golf,
16:25
I can still go and finish my schooling, but
16:28
it was kind of just the right time to
16:29
try to take golf to the next level.
16:31
Well, you get older and they stay the same age,
16:32
right, if you go back to school,
16:34
is that from Dazed and Confused.
16:35
I know, I'm showing how old I am.
16:37
Yeah Aaron's like, what, what is that?
16:39
(crowd laughing)
16:46
[Audience Member] Dazed and Confused.
16:47
Don't judge me in error.
16:48
What do you think's gonna be the biggest transition
16:51
from being a professional versus being an amateur
16:55
college golfer?
16:56
Just dealing with the time constraints and
16:59
obviously you can't focus on golf all the time,
17:01
there's other things you have to deal with and
17:05
that'll probly be the biggest part but
17:07
I'm excited to do it and
17:08
the opportunities out there are obviously great and
17:11
I'm ready to go out there and try to do my best.
17:13
What's like a normal practice day for you?
17:15
Are you somebody that likes to spend a ton of time
17:18
out at the range banging balls,
17:19
or do you prefer being on the course?
17:21
You know, kind of both.
17:22
I'll spend probly an hour, hour and a half maybe
17:25
on the range and then maybe go play nine holes
17:26
and then come back and work on what I need to work on
17:29
if there's something that's bugging me
17:30
or something that I don't feel is where it needs to be
17:32
then I work on that after the nine holes.
17:34
You could kind of see, here at Callaway,
17:36
especially here at Callaway Live,
17:37
little bit of a college atmosphere, am I right?
17:39
(crowd laughing)
17:41
You can see some people that have overindulged in the back,
17:43
(mumbling) go with them.
17:45
(laughing)
17:46
Is that done with the key stand back there,
17:48
are you guys done?
17:51
One of the things that we do here,
17:52
especially for all new people to the team,
17:54
just like it's a little hazing
17:56
and so tonight we're gonna do our version
17:58
of some rookie hazing and we are going to
18:02
make you sing
18:04
the Callaway Fight Song.
18:06
Awesome.
18:07
Are you ready for it?
18:08
Okay, so everybody here obviously knows
18:10
the Callaway Fight Song.
18:11
I'm gonna, everybody stand up and
18:12
we're gonna hand you here,
18:14
and you'll notice that this song was written
18:17
many, many years ago and the tune of it
18:20
is very similar to Take Me Out to the Ballgame, Aaron.
18:23
Nice.
18:24
On the count of three, and this is a very
18:26
patriotic Callaway crowd, we're gonna let you lead us.
18:29
Oh, awesome.
18:30
Into the Callaway Fight Song.
18:31
Great, even better.
18:32
Ready?
18:33
One, two,
18:36
three.
18:42
This is terrible.
19:14
(crowd cheering)
19:16
Alright, excellent, thanks, Aaron.
19:18
No problem.
19:19
Aaron Wise, everyone.
19:20
Thanks everybody for being here.
19:21
Great shows we did, we'll see you again in August
19:24
on Callaway Live, good luck this week,
19:27
Thank you.
19:27
Aaron's gonna win this week.
19:28
Thanks everybody. (crowd cheering)
19:29
Let's take 'em out, one more time!
19:39
Get the camera off me.
19:44
I sure hope they keep (mumbling).
