How Marijuana Affects Your Golf Game

In this influential study, three golfers of different skill levels try a series of golf shots after consuming more and more marijuana to see how cannabis affects their game. A semi-pro, an amateur, and a casual golfer progress through five rounds of driving off the tee, hitting with an iron, and putting on the green - first while sober then smoking more and more with each round of shots. Sports Medicine Physician Dr. Ara Suppiah MD explains what's happening to each golfer under the influence.

[Willie] My name is Willie, and I'm a 6 handicap.
00:04
[Scott] My name is Scott, and I'm a 13 handicap.
00:06
[Jack] My name is Jack, and I'm an 18 handicap.
00:15
Do you guys have any good golf jokes?
00:17
(laughing)
00:21
When you smoke cannabis,
00:26
you might start to relax a bit,
00:27
and the performance might actually get better.
00:31
[Scott] I'd say I'm an athletic amateur.
00:33
[Jack] A little nervous, hope to stay calm and cool.
00:36
[Willie] We're probably gonna smoke
00:37
more than one normally would.
00:39
[Jack] As we smoke, you settle down,
00:41
you know, observe the grass and the trees,
00:43
and it helps you focus in a little bit.
00:45
[Willie] But yeah, I don't think I'm gonna be
00:46
setting any personal bests.
00:48
I'm just gonna give you a quick sobriety test.
00:51
I'm just gonna move my finger
00:52
back and forth across your face.
00:54
I want you to follow it with your eyes
00:55
without moving your head, okay?
00:57
[Ara] The horizontal gaze nystagmus test
00:59
shows signs of intoxication,
01:01
but the eyes should stay static, they'll start twitching.
01:03
Good job, Willie. Did I pass?
01:04
Yep. Yes.
01:05
(upbeat music)
01:11
[Willie] I'm more serious about, like as a fan,
01:14
than I am about my own game.
01:16
I like to play and practice and stuff,
01:18
but I still keep it fun, not so serious.
01:21
I'm feeling good, feeling confident.
01:28
[Scott] I definitely hit some good shots,
01:29
but from time to time,
01:30
I can get a little loose with the club.
01:34
I like to go out and chase the ball around,
01:36
and at the end of the day,
01:37
it's just about hanging out with friends and having fun.
01:48
[Jack] I love golf, yet I am really bad.
01:51
I play like once or twice a week.
01:53
By myself, I go out there.
01:55
So I'm a dedicated golfer, but I'm not very good.
02:02
Let's get high.
02:04
[Ara] When you have a vape,
02:05
the amount that you smoke, it's a fixed dose.
02:11
(inhaling) (coughing)
02:14
Big draw there.
02:15
Tasted pretty good.
02:16
Yeah. Yeah.
02:18
(bell dings)
02:20
[Ben] That's gonna complete the sobriety test.
02:22
Thank you. Yeah.
02:23
[Ben] It's a pleasure.
02:24
(upbeat music)
02:29
Feel good, got a little buzz goin'.
02:32
I'm feelin' very well,
02:32
took couple rips of like a little pen,
02:35
so I'm hoping to really be able to visualize and shots.
02:39
(laughing)
02:40
[Jack] I think it's gonna let me focus.
02:42
We'll just be pure.
02:44
[Willie] This round will be pretty good, I hope.
02:46
[Jack] That was explosive, woo.
02:51
Warm-up, right? Oh, live?
02:53
(beep) it, we'll do it live (beep).
02:55
[Ara] Marijuana has both THC and CBD.
02:58
THC is the psychoactive component
03:01
so when you smoke,
03:02
the THC part is what gives you the euphoria
03:05
the high and the psychological effect.
03:09
The CBD part, which doesn't bind to any receptors,
03:12
is what gives you the anti-inflammatory
03:14
and the pain relieving part.
03:16
Better than last time, more relaxed.
03:22
Be the ball.
03:24
[Ara] The effect of THC is called the biphasic reaction.
03:28
When you have a small dose, you have a certain effect,
03:31
and a higher dose you can get very agitated and paranoid
03:34
and that's the therapuetic window.
03:35
In that window is the spot where people try to stay
03:39
within to get the maximum effect.
03:44
Shall we? Cheers.
03:46
Cheers boys.
03:47
(inhaling) (coughing)
03:49
Done.
03:52
(bell ringing)
03:54
[Ben] That concludes your sobriety test.
03:56
You didn't pass this one.
03:57
I'm feeling pretty good, I'm feeling a little goofy.
04:00
I had a delicious lunch, had a nice burger.
04:02
And I feel pretty loose, still a little hungry to be honest.
04:07
A little bit lazy maybe in the muscles.
04:10
But we'll get there hopefully.
04:13
(Upbeat music)
04:17
[Ara] They not be able to drive every single time.
04:19
A little toe-y.
04:22
I'm really trying to make better contact
04:23
with the driver on this one.
04:24
I think I've been off center
04:27
so hopefully this will center me.
04:30
Nice.
04:33
Yeah.
04:35
That was the best one.
04:39
I'm good, good as ever.
04:42
I'm thinking of hitting a low penetrating ball foot.
04:45
I think that's a good approach.
04:46
I'm gonna take that one for the win.
04:48
[Ara] Cannabis affects everybody differently.
04:51
I'm a little concerned about my golf swing
04:53
but we'll get there, hopefully.
04:55
Mind over matter.
04:56
[Ara] At a low dose, it has a kind of a relaxing,
05:00
decreasing the amount of anxiety you have
05:02
and that can actually help you play better.
05:07
You all ready for this?
05:09
(upbeat music)
05:11
I feel loose I would say, so not tight.
05:14
(laughing) As in the opposite.
05:18
[Ara] A lot of people lose this inhibition,
05:21
too uptight about this call, can kinda relax and let loose.
05:25
(whooping)
05:26
I really thought I was on a roll.
05:29
[Jack] You guys want to smoke a joint?
05:34
(inhaling)
05:37
(bell ringing)
05:41
I was aware of it though.
05:42
[Ben] You passed your sobriety test.
05:43
Yes!
05:44
[Ben] Very good, congratulations.
05:47
I feel stoned.
05:49
Right now, I would definitely say that I'm not low.
05:52
But yeah, I don't think it's going to go as well.
05:56
(upbeat music)
06:00
I'm struggling with the drivers still.
06:02
I think I need to swing less hard.
06:06
275. (whooping)
06:10
[Ara] The tension in the body goes down.
06:11
Whoops, that doesn't count.
06:14
[Ara] And when the tension in the body goes down,
06:16
the club head speed will go up.
06:17
I feel like I'm going to rip some more drives,
06:19
feeling the flow there.
06:21
I think that's where,
06:22
I think we actually help.
06:23
As long as you got decent fundamentals,
06:24
you can just swing as hard as you can,
06:26
and like it just goes, it's so fun.
06:28
[Ara] So you see people drive it probably a lot better.
06:39
Irons, not so much.
06:40
[Ara] The THC dissolves in fat, gets into the bloodstream.
06:44
It then gets across the blood-brain barrier.
06:46
I'm too tired.
06:47
[Ara] It affects two parts of the brain,
06:49
the temporal lobe, which is on the side.
06:51
Things like fast making decisions, complex movement,
06:54
complex thought processes are affected
06:56
on a negative way.
06:58
Beautiful divot, not great.
07:04
[Ara] The frontal lobe, where those executive decisions,
07:07
willpower, emotions are affected.
07:10
You can actually become very calm.
07:11
I kinda wanna like lay down
07:12
and watch the clouds go by, you know?
07:15
[Ara] But depending on where, in what dose,
07:17
it affects the brain in that way.
07:22
[Scott] You rolled that really well.
07:23
That was, really.
07:24
(inhaling)
07:26
Don't tell my mom, dude.
07:30
(bell ringing)
07:31
[Ben] Scale of one to ten, how high do you feel right now?
07:32
Nine, probably, right?
07:33
Eight and a half.
07:34
Like a soft seven.
07:39
[Ben] You failed your final sobriety test.
07:41
(groaning)
07:41
Yeah, I didn't expect to pass.
07:42
[Ben] You passed your final sobriety test.
07:44
Again, how could I possibly have passed my sobriety test?
07:50
I don't even want to do this,
07:51
let's just do it, get it over with.
07:52
[Ara] Usually it's very difficult to tell
07:54
if somebody's high on marijuana.
07:56
I'm gonna try to hit the guy.
07:57
[Willie] Yeah, I'm feeling pretty high, pretty stoned.
08:00
I just like, I can't think straight right now.
08:02
My arms are so heavy.
08:04
[Ara] It's a very emotional reaction that they have.
08:06
Oh, buddy. (laughing)
08:08
I'd say I feel pretty ripped at the moment.
08:10
Euphoria mixed with some excitement and some nerves.
08:14
You can't golf like this.
08:15
[Ara] Many, many things go into this.
08:17
It doesn't affect everybody the same.
08:19
(whooping)
08:23
All right, let's do it, (beep) it.
08:24
[Ara] As the amount of THC
08:26
in the brain starts building up,
08:27
you might actually see them getting
08:30
to a point where they don't care.
08:32
Perfect chance to hit the guy.
08:36
Really could go anywhere.
08:37
With the irons, I just hope that I can hit it straight.
08:42
I would say this is the highest I've ever been golfing.
08:48
[Jack] It sucks to end on that one.
08:53
(upbeat music)
08:58
Steady. That's hot.
09:05
(cheering)
09:07
Nice finish, dude.
09:11
I'm so tired. (laughing)
09:13
I think that when you get stoned and play golf,
09:15
you, like, a little bit is good,
09:17
I think that our results probably show
09:18
that you can handle that.
09:19
This is excessive.
09:21
Excessive, for sure.
09:21
My favorite part of the day was driving the golf ball.
09:24
(laughing)
09:25
Mine too, yeah, like second or third rounds, second round.
09:29
Or third round, one of those.
09:30
All of it was really fun.
09:31
I do think that we really did bring out
09:33
the best in each other.
09:34
Yeah, and I really think we're gonna play golf
09:35
with each other again.
09:37
And maybe we'll smoke some weed.
09:39
[Ara] You know the best way to recover
09:41
from smoking marijuana is to go to bed and sleep,
09:44
and eat, and just let it come out of your system.
09:46
There's no magic pill.
09:48
Please don't smoke weed and golf,
09:50
and please don't drive the cart,
09:52
and please don't drive yourself home
09:53
if you smoke a joint on the golf course.
