Gym Fix: Cure Your Slice

Golf Digest's Ron Kaspriske demonstrates a great exercise you can do in the gym to train your quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, abs and obliques to generate proper trunk rotation. You can even do it as a warm-up before you play.

it's gonna work those often ignored posterior muscles

You don't wanna know any of that.

What you wanna know is that this exercise

can help cure your slice.

So let me show it to ya.

This is a split stance torso rotation with,

I'm using something called an active motion bar.

It's a weighted bar.

However, if you don't have a weighted bar,

you could also use a golf club, a hockey stick,

anything you can prop across your chest.

So, the exercise looks like this.

Get into a split stance.

I want you to pin the bar across your chest as I am here.

Now, I'm already feeling like I'm having

to activate my core and my glute muscles

just to hold this position,

but we're not done yet,

'cause you now have to side bend,

and the rotation looks like this.

Okay, so what's goin' on there,

is I'm using my oblique muscles to rotate my trunk

while my lower body stays fairly stationary, yet stable.

That's real important in a golf swing,

especially if you wanna swing down from the inside,

which is the way you'll correct that slice.

One key point to remember with this exercise

is I want you to stay up off your toe on the front foot.

So you wanna feel most of your weight in your heel,

because when you rotate through in a golf swing,

that's where you should be.

If you're on your toes, you're gonna slice.
