I'm Hank Haney, and it's time for another Five-Minute Fix.
00:03
(upbeat music)
00:07
I'm here with NASCAR great Michael Waltrip.
00:10
In today's Fix, we're gonna work on his setup.
00:12
Because in NASCAR it's all about the setup.
00:17
The one thing that's most important for me
00:19
to work on today with Hank is my setup.
00:21
My setup's off.
00:27
Proper setup gives you a chance to make a good takeaway,
00:30
and that will set you up to make a better swing.
00:34
The problem with my setup was
00:36
that I would come too far inside.
00:38
Your feet, knees, hips,
00:40
eyes, shoulders and arms
00:43
should be parallel left of your target.
00:45
I needed to get my right arm up,
00:47
and get the club back on line.
00:49
That would allow me to come through on the right plane.
00:51
If you hit the ground, you hit it fat.
00:53
If you catch in on the upswing, you hit it thin.
00:55
The other key was
00:56
turning my hips.
00:58
After we got our setup right,
00:59
then I wasn't firing my hips.
01:01
Come on, like you mean it.
01:02
Everything you got.
01:04
You could see the difference, couldn't you?
01:06
You got after it.
01:07
When I would hit the perfect shot with my hips fired,
01:10
my divot would be in front of the ball,
01:11
and that is a wonderful feeling.
01:15
With Michael Waltrip, what he was doing was setting up
01:17
where his arms were aligned too much to the right.
01:21
So what I got him doing was squaring
01:22
his arms up at address.
01:24
That got his takeaway going a lot straighter back
01:26
and more on the correct plane.
01:28
And then the last thing was just making sure
01:30
that he turned his body all the way through.
01:32
By finishing through all the way with his hips,
01:35
he moved the bottom of the swing forward
01:36
and he started making ball turf contact.
01:39
You're the best, thank you much.
01:40
Thanks, I appreciate that.
01:41
So happy I met you.

And with some speed, though.
01:47
Speed.
01:49
You of all people, and I gotta tell you to go faster?
01:51
As I wound down my racing career,
01:53
I did hear that quite a few times.
01:55
(laughter)
