Should You Do Olympic Lifts?

If you're a golfer and you're wondering whether you should be doing Olympic lifts as a way of bolstering power and overall fitness, here's some advice from strength-and-conditioning expert Mike Boyle.

Just want to talk a little bit about

power development for golfers.

Obviously, we're gonna say

your male middle aged golfer.

There's been a lot of attention to Olympic lifting,

to crossfit style training, doing things like

clean and jerks, clean and presses.

This is probably not going to work really well,

but we want to talk about is some potential alternatives.

There are two really good alternatives,

one being dumbbell olympic lift, and the other two

being some type of medicine ball throw.

The dumbbell we think about dumbbell olympic lifting,

what's called a dumbbell snatch.

Basically, taking a single dumbbell,

putting it between the knees, same kind of

triple extension jumping that you would get

in Olympic lifting but thinking jump, catch,

wait over head here. Boom.

That's gonna allow you much safer, it's gonna compensate

for a little bit of lack of shoulder mobility,

it's gonna allow you to develop some explosive power

through your hips and legs without compromising

your shoulder, your lower backs more likely to be injured.

Another really simple thing that you can do is

just a simple overhead scoop throw.

I'm not gonna let the ball go, but the basic idea is

that I'd take the ball between my legs,

throw it as high as I could

so it went up and over behind me.

The third one would be kind of a squat to press throw.

Same idea where I'm gonna sit here and

I'm gonna throw the ball up on an arc as far as I can.

What we want you to realize, particularly when we start

the golfer, the middle aged weekend warrior guy.

Olympic lifting, probably not going to be

a really great choice, but some of these simpler things,

something like dumbbell snatch, these overhead scoop throws,

squat to press are going to be much better alternatives.
