My mom lived three doors down and she called me one day
00:11
and she goes, You gotta come down
00:12
and watch Drew hit this ball.
00:13
He's barely walking and he doesn't have a club.
00:15
She goes, Oh no, I've got him a club
00:17
and he's in the backyard hitting balls.
00:19
Basically in diapers, he had this little club
00:23
and he was knocking the ball around in the backyard already.
00:25
So I took it from there.
00:27
Being on the putting green with him,
00:29
walking the courses with him, being out there
00:31
amongst the show.
00:33
I used to absolutely love being
00:35
on the practice putting green.
00:37
I could put around with him, I could have putting contests
00:39
against the other guys.
00:40
It was great.
00:42
I guess I wouldn't swing like that
00:44
if maybe he had been a little tougher on me,
00:47
but I love golf.
00:49
Golf's a great sport and you were successful
00:52
for me liking the game.
00:54
I wasn't very strict on fundamentals.
00:57
Maybe I could've been.
00:59
All four boys are good players.
01:00
It's not important that they be another Jack Nicklaus,
01:04
it's important that they have a game that they can play
01:06
and enjoy for a lifetime.
01:09
His big thing was to get in the picker
01:11
when the guy was picking up the balls on the range
01:13
and he'd go in the picker and he'd get a little cup
01:16
of Goldfish--
01:17
And he would try and hit me.
01:18
And a lemonade and then I'd go after him,
01:20
which was really funny.
01:22
Like at three and four years old, we were out on tour.
01:24
Actually before that, two and a half actually.
01:27
And we went out on tour so they had their little clubs
01:30
and they'd bang the ball around and they had no choice.
01:33
And there was no daycare and now it's set up
01:35
where there's daycare every week.
01:37
So back then when we'd spend our summer's on tour
01:40
and even when we weren't in school,
01:41
we're out there all the time
01:43
and we're watching Dad play.
01:45
Well, I was especially frustrated
01:47
because I was left-handed, so I was hitting
01:49
the back of the irons.
01:51
I didn't get any good results.
01:52
Dad wouldn't let him play left-handed
01:53
because he had all the right-handed clubs at home.
01:56
I had a closet, I took Ronnie to the closet,
01:58
and I had 5,000 right-handed clubs.
02:00
Not that he couldn't have gotten
02:02
a left-handed set for him.
02:03
[Dave] There weren't that good of left-handed clubs
02:04
in those days.
02:05
You're ambidextrous now.
02:06
[Dave Jr.] Should've been a leftie.
02:07
Yes, yes I am, Dad.
02:08
[Dave] Yes, you are. (laughs)
