So, let's talk about the A Swing backswing.
00:07
Big difference from a conventional backswing.
00:10
The big key is making sure
00:12
that the butt of the club moves in
00:14
while the club head stays out.
00:15
So, hands in, club head out.
00:18
And, this is crucial.
00:18
We see so many golfers who just
00:20
roll the club away going back.
00:22
Remember, the butt of the club moves on one track.
00:25
The head moves on another.
00:27
This is always inside that club head.
00:30
And, we want to try to feel that all the way to the top.
00:33
As I do this, you can see my right arm
00:35
stays on top of my left arm.
00:37
The club face looks at the ball.
00:38
No rotation of the club face.
00:40
It actually feels slightly closed here.
00:43
Now, as I move the club away,
00:46
I want to feel a setting with my right wrist.
00:48
Load that right wrist.
00:50
And, you can see the club,
00:51
it is still outside my hands.
00:53
This is what I'm trying to achieve.
00:55
It's very difficult to get it absolutely in this position,
00:57
but the closer you get to this,
00:59
the better because, literally,
01:00
when I'm about halfway back,
01:02
I want a sense of the shaft is almost matching my spine.
01:05
Now, anywhere between here and here is fine.
01:07
You just gotta get the club up on its end,
01:10
sensing that, hey,
01:11
once the club is here
01:13
as I just complete my rotation with my body,
01:16
you can see that's as far as I want to go.
01:18
I want to keep my left arm under my shoulder plane.
01:20
I want to make sure that the grip I had at address
01:23
is still apparent.
01:24
You can see I still have a little cup
01:25
at the base of the left wrist and the right wrist.
01:28
And, my left arm is actually under my shoulders.
01:30
I want to keep this nice and short,
01:32
but yet, the club is not far short of parallel.
01:36
In fact, you don't have to wind up that much.
01:40
If this is far as you can go,
01:41
as long as the club is in balance.
01:42
You see, the club being in this position here, folks,
01:45
allows the club to get onto the right plane coming down.
01:48
It's all about getting the club
01:49
on the right plane coming down.
01:50
That's why the backswing is so important.
01:53
So remember, hands in,
01:55
club out, right arm on top.
01:58
As I set the right wrist,
01:59
I just feel that the club head
02:01
still stays outside my hands all the way to the top.
02:03
It's an inverted feel.
02:05
And now, at the top of the backswing,
02:07
the club, if anything,
02:08
points slightly to the right of the target.
02:10
It's a very natural motion.
02:12
If I swing the club with two fingers and a thumb,
02:14
look where the club wants to get to.
02:15
It's slightly across the line.
02:17
Many great players throughout the history of this game
02:20
have actually had the club slightly
02:21
across the line at the top,
02:22
rather than laid off.
02:23
And, once you're here,
02:24
the club has a almost...
02:26
You put life into the club.
02:28
It has a life of its own.
02:29
It's got swing.
02:30
You're putting swing into your swing from this position.
02:32
A much simpler backswing,
02:34
the club is traveling a much shorter route
02:36
to get to the completion point.
02:38
And, from here,
02:39
you're in a great position now to start down.
02:42
And, that back swing,
02:43
very different,
02:44
very simple,
02:45
but very efficient.
