Cameron Champ is golf's newest (and longest) star
Alex Myers discusses the jaw-dropping arrival of Cameron Champ on the PGA Tour.
Released on 11/1/2018
So Cameron Champ won in just
his second start as PGA Tour member.
And I already thought up a super original movie title
to describe the occurrence, A Star is Born.
There's already a movie called that?
Starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga? [chuckles]
Nice try I don't believe you.
Anyway, the Cameron Champ era in golf has begun.
By the way, can you have a better name?
Answer, you cannot.
Well, other than maybe Tiger Woods who this masher
of the golf club grew up idolizing.
He's even coached by one
of Woods's former swing coaches, Sean Foley.
Sean, please, please be careful with this guy.
Like Tiger, he's really fun to watch.
Champ's maiden victory coincided
with him being on the cover of Golf Digest.
We've got pretty good timing, huh?
And that rooster trophy was especially fitting
because he just served a wake-up call
to the rest of the PGA Tour. [crowing]
The Champ is here.
Champ may have won in his second start,
but he had already established himself
as the biggest hitter in the game.
Champ's average swing speed clocks in
around 130 miles per hour, or about five miles
per hour faster than any else on the PGA Tour.
More importantly, the 190 plus ball speed he generates
is about 10 miles per hour faster
than the next fastest.
As Sean Foley says, we're basically looking
at the Usain Bolt of golf.
So how far can Champ hit a golf ball?
During his breakthrough win
at the Sanderson Farms Championship,
his average drive was 20 yards longer
than anyone else in the field.
And last year, he won a Web.com Tour event
in which he averaged 391 yards off the tee.
That's video game cheat code level stuff!
This is like when John Daly arrived
on the seen gripping and ripping it
a country mile past anyone else.
Only Champ doesn't have a mullet
or a few other problems that sidetracked JD.
Champ is only 23, so buckle up
because hopefully we have a couple decades
of watching him hit the absolutely snot
out of the ball.
What a talent!
What a name.
A star is born indeed.
Wait, so that's really a movie?
It's a remake of a remake?
[sighs] Well, it's a good title.
[hip hop music]
