Phil Mickelson: The Shorter Wider Driver Swing

Phil Mickelson and Butch have worked together since 2007. Over the years, they've tried to make Mickelson's driver swing shorter and wider, which he does well on short-iron approaches.

The first thing we talked about when I started
00:05
working with you, Butch, was my rear knee.
00:07
We wanted to get rid of the slice that I had been
00:10
hitting under some pressure situations.
00:12
My rear knee would slide back and point away,
00:17
as opposed to perpendicular to the target line.
00:19
And as this would slide,
00:20
my weight would get stuck back here.
00:23
This is actually a hook position.
00:25
I would hang back and really hook it.
00:27
But because I would fight that hook,
00:29
what I ended up doing was holding on,
00:31
and creating this wiping slice.
00:34
And it was because my weight was stuck back here.
00:36
So the first thing you had me do
00:37
was try to keep my knee
00:39
pointed forward throughout the golf swing.
00:46
So that also creates a tighter
00:48
turn and a bit of resistance.
00:50
When the knee would give, I didn't have this resistance
00:52
to then push off, so by holding the knee forward
00:55
I was able to create a resistance
00:57
with my upper body turning.
00:59
That's so good and so important,
01:00
because sliding all over the place
01:03
can get you nothing but in trouble.
01:04
And this took a while for you to feel comfortable with this.
01:07
It did,
01:07
and then we progressed into the front leg.
01:10
And what would happen with my front leg is,
01:12
I would let this front leg come off the ground.
01:15
Now it seems fairly benign,
01:17
but what would happen is two things.
01:18
One, I wouldn't set it down consistently,
01:21
and two, at the top of my swing,
01:24
when this foot would give, I didn't have
01:26
the width that you would talk about.
01:27
A lotta your players that drive the ball great
01:29
over the years, Tiger and Norman specifically,
01:31
you know, they have this incredible width at the top.
01:34
But as this foot would give,
01:36
I wouldn't keep that same width
01:38
because it would throw the arc off.
01:40
By keeping the foot on the ground,
01:42
throughout the swing, I've been able to create
01:44
the width at the top of the golf swing,
01:47
allowing me to create speed.
