Bunker shots for most amateurs are difficult
00:05
in the best of times, but the longer ones,
00:07
say a 30 to 40 yard bunker shot is extremely difficult.
00:10
So, step number one would be to take a less lofted club,
00:13
either a gap wedge, a pitching wedge, a nine iron,
00:15
even possibly an eight iron, depending on
00:17
the length of the shot.
00:18
You've gotta make sure that you open the face slightly
00:20
because you need to utilize the bouts.
00:22
And the beauty of it is that you don't really
00:24
have to swing that hard in order to get the ball
00:26
the distance that you're trying to hit it.
00:27
Step number two is to take less sand than normal,
00:31
so to take less sand, aim closer to the ball.
00:33
Generally speaking, with most bunker shots
00:35
you're gonna be aiming about two inches behind the ball.
00:37
So, halve that distance, about an inch or so
00:39
behind the ball, focus on that area, you'll take less sand
00:43
and as a result, the ball will come out a lot easier.
00:46
Okay, step number three, and this is something
00:48
I'm always on about with players, even tall players,
00:51
you must make a full backswing.
00:53
Okay, you don't wanna have this little short backswing,
00:55
which is what I see most people having.
00:57
A really full swing, and that will really allow you
01:00
to have the rhythm where you can swing smoothly.
01:02
Here's the final step for long green side bunker shots.
01:05
Make sure you maintain the flex in your knees
01:07
through impact.
01:08
If you straighten up through the shot,
01:09
there's a chance you can either hit behind it
01:11
or miss the sand entirely and actually hit the ball
01:14
cleanly, and that's now what you want to do.
01:16
So remember, keep the flex in your knees through impact,
01:18
and then make sure you swing to a full finish,
01:21
meaning that, hey, your right foot comes off the ground,
01:24
you have a reasonably full follow through,
01:25
because you're gonna need that sort of speed
01:27
in order to propel the ball to the flag.
