A Golf Digest Editor Gets a Style Upgrade from GQ
Our own Alex Myers gets a major makeover from the stylists at GQ.
Released on 8/6/2018
I describe my personal style as pretty average.
I just don't like to spend a lot of money.
For instance, this shirt cost 21 cents.
I think there is a serotype to golfers
and how maybe a golfer doesn't really have the best style,
whether you're wearing it while playing golf
or leaving the golf course and what you're wearing everyday
with your family or wife, your girlfriend,
your boyfriend, whatever it may be.
We have Alex here.
Wearing the idea of a suit is a little bit daunting for guys
but there's a casual way to do it.
We'll show you multiple options today.
It doesn't just have to be with a shirt and tie.
You can wear it with a few different things.
Let's start with the hair, we're gonna do
a little bit of a hair cut and then we'll go from there.
Sounds good. Okay.
Lucy, I think we'll just start by
cleaning it all above the ears,
just making sure that it looks like a fresh cut.
It's a little thick on the sides,
so maybe we'll just take down some of that thickness,
then keep the length on the top,
but just give it some texture.
Good, oh good. Looks great.
That's important that you like it.
We'll start with the look that you're currently wearing
and we'll just update that with something new.
So we have the short sleeve button up.
This one's from Saturday's.
We'll do that with a new pair of chinos,
Banana Republic Rapid Movement Chino,
and then we'll try on a suit, this is Todd Snyder.
So, I think the idea of a suit is that it's very formal.
We're gonna quickly show you how to do a suit
more casually with four different tops
so it gives you a different idea to how to wear this.
So this is Alex's more casual look.
We got rid of the long sleeve button up.
We took it down to a short sleeve.
And then we got rid of his jeans
and we put him in some chinos,
which I think he will agree are just equally as comfortable.
Already he looks a lot more stylish,
he looks like he tried a little bit harder,
and we just finished it off with an easy white sneaker.
So now Alex is wearing the suit, this is from Todd Snyder.
It fits him perfectly.
Similar shirting to what he had on before,
but this is a stripe with a little bit more detail to it,
so there's a little bit more style.
Throwing them off with the sneaker,
everything's formal and fancy on top,
but you can still wear a sneaker and be office appropriate.
So here's Alex in the same Todd Snyder suit,
but we put on a loafer and then we went
with a more casual top, so this is a knit polo.
And if the green is a little too much
and the stripe and it's maybe a little too fashion,
then let's try this navy option.
So here's the same polo, but now it's in navy,
it's less in your face, maybe easier for a guy
to sort of wear, not as loud as the green,
but still just as good.
You can also take your jacket off
and you can wear this into the evening to dinner
and the polo still serves the same purpose,
but just a little bit more casual.
So here's Alex in the same suit trousers
that he's had on from the beginning,
but we took the jacket off, put it with
a gray crew neck sweatshirt.
This one's Champion Todd Snyder,
but J. Crew, Uniqlo, Gap, anyone will have
a gray crew neck sweatshirt.
It's just about getting the right size
so that you still feel good in it, but it's not too big
and you don't look like you're going to the gym.
So this is Alex in the fourth look,
still in the same suit trousers that he's wearing before,
paired down all the way, just with a striped t-shirt.
This is the linen t-shirt from Banana
with the suit pants that he had on earlier
and then still with the sneaker.
Casual, comfortable, won't get too hot this summer.
Getting my hair cut by Lucy was great.
I think it turned out well, I hope my wife likes it,
and definitely a lot better haircut
than my usual 15 dollar one with the barber.
I tried on a lot of different looks today,
I really like the suit looks the best.
You can dress down the suits, you can make 'em
a little more casual by wearing
a polo or t-shirt or something.
I work with a lot of golfers, obviously,
and I think we get a little bit
of a bad reputation for style.
By just making a little tweak here or there,
you can really upgrade your style and look a lot sharper.
