Released on 7/9/2009
[Dick Hicks] Dan Hicks, Roger Maltbie, Mark Rolfe
back with you with the Golf Digest US Open Challenge.
Larry Gibelhausen at the par five 13.
A six hundred and five yard hole.
[Roger] And stretched over 50 yards this years open.
This, his third shot.
Just clears the mound there.
Let's go back down to Mark Rolfe
and see how the cop is fairing.
Alright Larry, the big question
is how are you feeling right now?
Better now that the front-- the front was tough.
Felt great on the range, hit it great on the range
but I think I left it on the range.
[Mark] The nineties are still within reach.
[Larry] They are if I can make a few pars
keep it to single bogeys, I could still make it.
And you're pulling for me, right?
I am pulling for you, everybody's pulling for you.
[Dick] Giebelhausen at that plus twenty mark
Again, plus twenty-nine and he breaks a hundred.
Now Jordan's third from two hundred.
[Roger] Left himself a long way to the green
but starting to swing pretty well
getting pretty smooth here, Michael.
Smoothed out for MJ and the results
are looking better and better.
So he's two putts away from another par.
[Dick] And now Roethlisberger on the edge here.
He's got much less yardage left for his third.
[Roger] Still a pretty good lie just off the fairway.
That got wind.
[Roger] Over the top of the flag stick.
[Dick] Timberlake now with his fourth from 140.
[Roger] A little bit above his feet here.
He's going to hit this a little heavy.
They like it.
Anthony Kim loves it and it's a good way below the hole
but that's off short of the green.
[Timberlake] Thanks man.
[Roger] Still pretty acceptable from there.
And the wind got it a little bit.
Well we picked the right club there.
[Dick] Timberlake coming off that double bogey.
At the twelfth now Giebelhausen trying to pick up a par here
[Roger] It's off the green here
a little bit of a false edge here in the front.
Trying to use that putter.
I don't know if I really like that club choice.
Can you cheat it a little bit to the right?
Where's it plumb?
At the ball to the right.
Okay I think if you cheat it a little more to the right
than you think then you're better off.
It's going to be tricorn.
Yeah, I got you,
[Dick] Freddy in his Joey LaCava role here.
Interesting to here the stars
kind of give these guys advice, Rog.
[Roger] He's trying to give Michael a lag speed.
A read I should say, he wants him to hit the ball softly
so he's giving him a higher line.
[Dick] That's what he wanted, a great putt.
[Jordan] In the middle of my putt it
went this way and then the hole
it wants to go back that way.
[Dick] Alright, so Freddy's going to
save Michael's par for him here.
Now Roethlisberger, a chance to get it back to plus nine.
A pretty good read off of Michael's.
He just pushed her a touch, he did.
[Dick] Alright, easy par for Big Ben.
And a par putt now for Giebelhausen.
The stay it plus twenty.
[Dick] That's pretty close there.
So with five holes to play
Gielbelhausen has nine shots to play with.
He is at plus twenty.
Timberlake picks up a double bogey to fall the plus 14.
So it is on the par three fourteenth
and a new hole location for Mike Davis
and the United States Golf Association to deal with there.
They've got a new portion of the green there.
The front left part.
[Roger] Very narrow and they also expanded
the back right part of the green
giving them new hole locations on the right hand side.
But this front hole, very narrow.
If you're going to get the ball close to the hole.
[Dick] So Jordan, who has really steadied the ship here
working on three pars in a row.
Another smooth, rhythmic swing.
[Roger] And they're trying to get the players
to hit the ball past the hole.
He's really come alive.
[Jordan] Let's follow that lead, baby.
Follow that lead.
[Roger] Notice his attitude has changed a little, too.
[Dick] A little spring in Michael's step no doubt about it
[Roger] Alright, if Giebelhausen can
just play these last few holes
in pretty good shape, he's going to get the job done.
He just needs, really, to avoid disaster.
Double bogeys, one bogey, he does it.
So he needs to keep it under control.
Another good shot, okay, great shape here.
I'm telling you you can do it, just a normal nine iron.
[Jordan] That's a beautiful swing.
[Dick] Roethlisberger working on a plus ten score.
It's really good information Rocco's giving him, too.
It's all it is, hit the nine.
Watch where this carries.
Okay, don't tell me my business, boy!
I told you, it's just nothing, it was nothing.
It was nothing.
[Dick] Alright, so the last to play is Timberlake.
At plus 14.
Tied with Jordan at the moment.
Everything textbook in that setup.
Very nice golf swing.
Might have pulled that just a shade.
That comes back a bit and so all four golfers
safely on the green at the par three fourteenth.
And before this day began there were many who believed
that none of the four would break 100.
Right now, looks like all four have a very good chance.
